Pullman125project is an all-encompassing effort to honor the inheritance of our ancestors and ensure that their legacy will have a continued firm foundation for the next 125 years.

In August of 1891 the Pullman Memorial Universalist Church was officially chartered in Albion, New York. The immediate goal was to secure $5000 to meet a challenge put forth by railroad magnate George M. Pullman. Pullman promised to erect a church if there was "sufficient interest" and the $5K guarantee fund was to be the proof.

The challenge was met, and construction began late in 1893, was suspended for the winter, then resumed the following year. The building was dedicated and opened in January of 1895.

Pullman "spared no expense" in constructing and outfitting this building, which was a memorial to his parents. From his choice of architect (Solon S. Beman) to the stained glass windows and interior decor by Tiffany to stocking the library with over 500 books and filling the cupboards with china and silverware - all contributed to a magnificent project.

2016 marks the 125th anniversary of the formation of the congregation, and 2020 will mark the 125th anniversary of the opening of the building. Both of these upcoming dates inspire the current members of the church to put our best face forward.

The building has seen few renovations or alterations over the years that detract from its initial presentation. But time has taken some toll that requires attention. A new sound system has been added to the sanctuary with hearing assistive devices. Roof leaks are on schedule to be repaired which will allow the dining hall to be reclaimed for use. Stained glass windows will be cleaned and repaired before the 2020 anniversary. Maybe we will even complete the one element that George Pullman left unfinished - the purchase and installation of a bell into the belltower.

There is much to be done and we need your help. Any offering will make a difference. Please feel free to use the donation button above to make your funds quickly and easily available. If you would like to make a large contribution, or have questions, contact us at pmuc.albion@gmail.com
